Behind the Art
Dreams, the unconscious, inter-dimensional realities, spirituality, the occult, nature, sensuality, human nature, and the human condition have always intrigued me. They beckon like whispering shadows in the corners of our minds, urging exploration through creativity.
My journey into the realm of art began twenty-two years ago, though initially, my aspirations led me toward acting and directing. In my late teens and early twenties, I found myself drawn not only to the stage but to the wonderful intricacies of paint and sculpture, film, and video art. It was in 2004, upon earning my Bachelor's degree from Manchester Metropolitan University, that I ventured into the bustling streets of Manchester, working as a street fundraiser throughout the UK. During this time, photography and sketching emerged as vital modes of expression, finding their way into my experiences while wandering through cities like London, Berlin, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Budapest, and Florence.
London, in particular, ignited a creative fervor within me, expanding my focus significantly. As I pursued a Master's degree in Contemporary Arts: Performance Art at Goldsmiths University from 2006 to 2007, I experimented with various mediums—photography, drawing, and painting.
The city itself was alive with the vibrancy of optimism and the thrill of adventure. I remember sipping coffee at local cafés, sketching amidst the haphazard beauty of street life, the air thick with the bohemian spirit. I often found myself donning a pair of rose-tinted sunglasses, as if to romanticize the chaos around me. It was a time of visual discovery, creating a library of inspiration from what had been and what could be.
Yet, the solitude of this experience was both enlightening and daunting. For the first time, I was truly alone, veering between moments of poetic reflection and the dark edges of poverty. Financial struggles came to define this chapter, one that refused to tether me to a "proper job." In those moments of uncertainty, I clung to my artistic pursuits, grappling with ideas that transcended the mundane.
My art continues to evolve, reflecting the complexity of human existence and the myriad emotions that accompany it. Each stroke, each frame, invites others to peer into the depths of their own dreams and curiosities. The journey is as significant as the destination, and with every new exploration, the canvas transforms into a mirror of our shared consciousness, beckoning us to delve deeper into the nature of being.
This year, I will continue to develop the Flower Fury series using oils, crafting paintings that resonate with the essence of film noir, particularly the aesthetics of the thriller themes of Hitchcock. These works will encapsulate a sense of suspense and intrigue, drawing from the visual narrative styles commonly found in graphic novels.
In parallel with this series, I will invest time in sculpting with Monsterclay and natural clay. My focus will be on creating mythological and ghostly figures, exploring the intersection of the tangible and the ethereal. Both mediums will allow me to delve deeper into themes of mystery and the supernatural, enriching the experience I aim to share with my audience.
The synergy between the painted, sculpted, and photographic works will provide a multi-layered exploration of my ongoing fascination with nature, human experiences, and the enigmatic elements that surround our existence. I look forward to pushing the boundaries of my artistic expression throughout the year.
